然而這條免役之路走來並不順遂，韓國先是在小組賽過於輕敵，爆冷不敵馬來西亞，8強戰更是到延長賽中才靠著12碼以4：3險勝。此役在準決賽中，韓國靠著李昇祐梅開二度以及黃義助進球，以3：1踢倒越南，闖進金牌戰。
